STUDENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Students can volunteer in the
Centers assisting staff in supervising creative play activities.
Students serve as the models for our children. The one to one
interaction is extremely beneficial to both the children and volunteers.

Volunteer training is provided before students are placed in the
classroom. State Police and Child Abuse screenings are completed
at the expense of the agency.

Description Mercy Hospice is a non-profit

STUDENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: The duties of the volunteer are to provide
companionship and sitting respite with the patient to give the main
caregiver an opportunity to shop, visit, or just rest.

Description Hospice care traditionally has centered around care
of the terminally ill patient at home. There are times, however,
when the patient may require inpatient care. Our inpatient unit
has been designed to provide the patient with a home like
environment with unlimited and unrestricted visiting hours, a
gathering room equipped with kitchenette for families to prepare
a special meal. Families can spend the night with the patient.
STUDENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Volunteers are needed for companionship
for patients and their families.
TIME COMMITMENT: Volunteers are asked to make a one year (academic year)
commitment due to the intensive nature of the training program.

Description Habitat for Humanity International is a non-profit,
ecumenical housing organization with over 1700 affiliates world
wide. The Lackawanna County affiliate was organized in 1990 to
provide low-income families with the chance to own simple, decent
homes. Habitat relies on volunteers and donations to keep the
costs of its homes affordable. The homes are sold to approved
families, who pay interest free mortgages back to Habitat. The
money collected from the mortgage is reinvested into additional
homes for other qualifying families.
STUDENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Habitat for Humanity needs volunteers to help at the sites; building, painting, landscaping, cleaning, and a variety of other tasks. Workdays are scheduled through the office, and advance sign-up is encouraged, but not required.

Description Friendship House is a multifaceted agency which
provides comprehensive behavioral health care and protective
services for children and their families. They have a residential
capacity for 60 children and young adults ranging in age form 6 to 16.
These children are enrolled in the Partial Hospitalization/Day
Treatment Program, along with approximately 30 additional children
form the surrounding community.
STUDENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Friendship House needs volunteers in
several areas including one-to-one tutoring; assisting art, music and
recreation therapists; helping nurse with various testing; and any
skill that a volunteer possesses could be used to enhance the
services.
TIME COMMITMENT: The only time commitment asked is consistency.
One hour on a regular basis is better than several sporadic
hours.

Description St. Joseph's Center offers residential care to over 140 persons with severe or profound neurological impairments.
More than a roof overhead, compassionate care and active treatment are provided. Among the services are physical, occupational, recreational, music, and communication therapies.
STUDENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: The volunteers primarily work with the clients in residence. They are given the option of working on a one-to-one basis with a chosen individual or is they prefer, accompanying a resident to a group activity. Special project volunteers would be able to assist with field trips or big activities.
TIME COMMITMENT: Most regularly scheduled volunteers offer about
one hour per week. There is no set time commitment for special
project volunteers.
